The Team

As a firm, we owe our success to the support of our clients and the dedication of our staff. Platinum today employs more than 100 professionals, and each one of us is driven by the same core mission – to look after our clients’ money ably and responsibly. This is true not only of our investment team, but is also what steers our client services and operational teams.

As Platinum’s business grows and expands, we have been recruiting progressively to augment the talent of the firm. The investment team now consists of 36 analysts and portfolio managers (as at 1 May 2019), though since the firm’s inception our investment philosophy has remained unchanged and our methodology consistent. We have refined the structure of the team to ensure that our investment process achieves the optimal combination of individual expertise and accountability with collective acumen and experience. This is realised through several key attributes:

  • Collaboration and cohesion – our analysts and portfolio managers are organised into several sector/regional teams, with the investment ideas generated by each team feeding into various portfolios. These sector/regional teams are supported by a group of quant analysts and dealers who analyse macroeconomic data, monitor market sentiments, and contribute both stock ideas and execution strategy using quantitative tools. Our portfolio managers are first and foremost analysts and continue to research stocks. This organisational structure, including having all of our team members located in a single office, is designed to foster a collaborative environment and promote the free flow of information between analysts with different geographic and industry specialisations while also ensuring that everyone maintains a clear research focus and accountability. Regular intra- and cross-sector team meetings and the use of digital information repositories facilitate the open exchange of insights and sharing of resources which are critical to making investment decisions within a global context and for the avoidance of myopic biases.
  • Diverse backgrounds and unconventional thinking – our team includes analysts from a broad range of professional and cultural backgrounds, bringing with them unique industry experience, be it biomedical research or mining engineering, and varied perspectives. We encourage – in fact, require – idiosyncratic thinking from our analysts in order to pin-point what the market may have missed.
  • Longevity and continuity – Three of the four founding members of the investment team from 1994 continue to serve clients by investing. They also play an active role in mentoring newer members of the team and passing down Platinum’s values as well as the craft and know-how. It is true that over the years we have seen analysts come and go – not everyone is suited to our investment style. But we have also had plenty of talents coming through the ranks – all of our portfolio managers have been promoted organically from within the team. Members of the investment team have on average been with the firm for more than seven years while the nine portfolio managers’ average tenure with the firm is 15 years (as at 1 November 2018).

Portfolio Managers

  • Andrew Clifford
Chief Executive Officer & Chief Investment Officer
Andrew Clifford, BCom Hons (UNSW), Dip (FINSIA)

Andrew co-founded Platinum in 1994 as the Deputy Chief Investment Officer, having worked alongside Kerr for several years at Bankers Trust and perfecting the craft of uncovering the overlooked gems in the stock market. Like Kerr, Andrew believed that irrational market sentiments and the consequential short-term volatility can often lead to opportunity in companies whose true worth is temporarily under-appreciated. The approach worked for Andrew at Bankers Trust where the BT Select Market Trust – Pacific Basin Fund that he managed was a great success, and he has been applying and refining the same methodology over the past two decades to generate strong returns for Platinum’s investors.

Since taking over the role of Chief Investment Officer in 2013, Andrew has spent considerable time and effort on improving the organisational structure of the gradually-expanding investment team to make the execution of our investment process more seamless and efficient.

With full endorsement from the Board, Andrew took over the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Platinum Group from Kerr on 1 July 2018 and will lead the firm to write its next chapter.

Andrew handed over portfolio management responsibilities of the Platinum Asia Fund to Joseph Lai in late 2014, which he had managed since the fund’s inception in 2003. He took over the portfolios of Platinum Capital Limited (ASX code: PMC) and The Platinum Master Portfolio Ltd from Kerr on 1 July 2018, and co-manages with Clay Smolinski the flagship Platinum International Fund, the Platinum International Fund (Quoted Managed Hedge Fund), and the Platinum World Portfolios - International Fund.

  • Clay Smolinski
    Portfolio Manager
    Clay Smolinski, BCom (Murdoch)

Graduating as dux of Finance from university and a brief stint as an accountant at Grant Thornton gave Clay the grounding to deconstruct financial statements. But it is his avid reading habit and a curiosity about how businesses work that guided Clay onto the path of a self-taught investor and landed him a job as an analyst at Platinum in 2006.

Clay began managing the Platinum European Fund in 2009 and was assigned to manage the global portfolio of the Platinum Unhedged Fund in 2014. Clay took over from Kerr the portfolio management responsibilities for the Platinum Global Fund (mFund) and MLC Platinum Global Fund from 1 July 2018, and co-manages with Andrew Clifford the flagship Platinum International Fund, the Platinum International Fund (Quoted Managed Hedge Fund), and the Platinum World Portfolios - International Fund.

Clay leads the financials/services sector team.

Analysts

Generalist

  • Kerr Neilson
    Investment Analyst
Kerr Neilson, BCom (University of Cape Town)

Kerr, with the help of Andrew Clifford, founded Platinum in 1994 with a view to making money for investors. The emphasis was on continuing the successful investment approach he had employed previously. This entailed building portfolios of misunderstood companies that were experiencing change or mispricing due to transient factors or intuitive biases applied by market participants at large. By investing in companies around the world, unconstrained by index weighting or other pre-determined allocation parameters, Platinum owned genuinely differentiated portfolios and produced outstanding investment returns.

From day one Kerr and the team eschewed the use of hard selling techniques, maintaining that if our performance can withstand the test of time, there should never be a need for such tactic; whereas, if Platinum fails to generate satisfactory returns for investors, then the firm should not continue. Prior success, notably, sidestepping the 1987 crash, ensured that from the outset there were willing investors prepared to give Kerr and his team sufficient support to gradually build the business and, fortunately, Platinum’s performance over the years has proven the longevity of our approach.

As Platinum’s investment philosophy and process became systematically inculcated within the team, Kerr stepped down as the Chief Investment Officer in 2013, and has over time handed over his various portfolio management responsibilities to other global portfolio managers in the team.

With the full endorsement of the Board, Kerr handed over the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Platinum Group to Andrew Clifford on 1 July 2018. Continuing to serve as a full-time executive director of the Platinum Group and a member of Platinum's investment team, Kerr remains fully engaged in the business and continues to work on the generation of investment ideas as well as provides additional support to the firm's client diversification initiatives in Europe and the US.

The benefits of Kerr’s endeavours over the decades are also being felt beyond Platinum’s investors as the Neilson Foundation pursues its mission of social inclusion.

Founders

Liz’s appointment to the Board in 2013 as Director of Investor Services and Communications reflects the firm’s ever-greater focus on its widening client base and a strong commitment to supporting retail and institutional clients with dedicated investment specialists.

  • Toby Harrop
    Investment Analyst
    Toby Harrop, BCom Hons (Melbourne)

Toby was a member of the original Platinum team. He began his career as a graduate trainee at Bankers Trust in the early 1990s where his analytical acumen made a strong impression on Kerr.

As a founding member of Platinum’s investment team, Toby was responsible for covering European companies and supervised currency strategy.

Toby was the portfolio manager of the Platinum European Fund from the fund’s inception in 1998 until 2009 when he departed from the firm to live in Europe.

Toby re-joined Platinum in 2014 to assist with coverage of healthcare stocks while Bianca was on maternity leave. He has since stayed on as an analyst, working closely with Bianca on the healthcare sector.
